Learn about and have a try at Japanese arts and crafts, food and dress, in a day of fun workshops by professional Japanese artists.

Featuring Japanese traditional and modern culture.

Class-sizes are limited and bookings are recommended. This is a family friendly event.

SHIORI NINGYO – BOOKMARK DOLL WORKSHOP BY KANOMI – YUKATA.YA (Sold out)

Join us for an enchanting workshop where you can unleash your creativity and craft your own Shiori Ningyo, a unique type of Japanese paper doll known as a ‘bookmark doll’. 

In this class, we will explore the fundamental techniques of paper-doll crafting to bring a charming little Shiori Ningyo to life. Once your doll takes shape, we’ll personalise it into a one-of-a-kind piece of art.

We will provide all the necessary materials, and no prior experience is required. (Please note that scissors will be used in this class.)

Session 1. Figure 1 (a little girl) [easy] 11:00am-12:pm (1h)

This workshop is suitable for participants aged 7 and above, so bring along your young artists for a delightful, artistic adventure!

Session 2. Figure 2 (A young girl) 12:30pm-2:00pm (1.5h)

This workshop is suitable for participants aged 12 and above. If you wish to participate with younger children, please consider session 1.

千代紙は日本の伝統的な紋や模様が入っている美しい和紙で、その独特の柄や色は見ているだけで楽しませてくれます。このワークショップではそんな千代紙を使って可愛い小さなしおり人形を作ります。最後にフレームに入れて自分だけのオリジナルアートにしてみましょう。

セッション1は7歳以上のお子様から大人まで大歓迎です。

セッション2は12歳以上の方対応です。小さなお子様と参加希望の方はセッション1がおすすめです。

MINI JAPANESE PAPER DOLL BY KANOMI – YUKATA.YA

During this workshop, we will guide you in crafting a charming three-dimensional mini Japanese paper doll using Chiyogami paper.

Traditional Japanese paper doll-making materials can be challenging to acquire, but fear not, as we’ll share some clever tips on substituting certain items with readily available alternatives.

By the end of the session, you will have your own petite, 12~13cm tall girl figurine that can stand independently.

We’ll also provide a glass jar for you to display and safeguard your paper doll.

This class is suitable for individuals aged 12 and older. If you wish to participate with young children, please consider our Shiori Ningyo Workshop.

このワークショップでは、繊細な千代紙を使って、小さな和紙人形を作ります。

伝統的な和紙人形の材料を入手するのは難しいかもしれませんが、身近にある材料に置き換えて作るヒントを紹介します。

セッションが終わる頃には、身長12~13cmの魅力的で立体的な女の子の紙人形が出来上がります。紙人形を飾り、保護するためのガラス瓶も提供します。

Japanese ceramic design workshop :陶芸絵付けデザイン体験

Let’s have fun decorating ceramics!

In  this workshop , you can create your own original ceramic tea bowl,or travel cup. Naoko will provide you with one of her own studio crafted tea bowl or travel cup to decorate with underglaze and a beautiful selection of handmade tissue transfers imported directly from Japan. Your creation will be professionally glazed, fired and delivered back to Japaneasy (or if you’d prefer, have it delivered to your home  at the cost of shipping) around 4 weeks later, ready to use or gift to someone special!

In this workshop, you will learn how to make Japanese style pottery to create a cup and a mini bowl. Naoko will provide all the tools and clay. Your cup and mini bowl will be professionally trimmed, fired, glazed, and delivered back to Japaneasy (or if you’d prefer, have it delivered to your home  at the cost of shipping) around 4 weeks later, ready to use or gift to someone special!

Perfect for all skill levels, this hands-on experience will guide you through crafting stunning knotted earrings using elegant paper cords.

Let’s experience Sumi-e and create a unique piece of art to take home. Sumi-e is the ancient art of Japanese brush painting. Traditionally, paintings feature subjects from nature. There is much more to creating an image during the process of Sumi-e, it is also a meditative practice to explore and express your inner self.

You will learn to use different ink tones and brush techniques to create some simple and expressive paintings on Japanese Washi paper such as Koi fish and birds. All the materials will be provided and all ages are welcome 🙂

墨絵を体験して自分らしい作品をおもいっきり描いてみましょう。墨絵は日本の伝統芸術の一つで、花や山岳、鳥など自然のものを墨を使って描きます。
 
墨絵はシンプルな絵画芸術であるとともに、自分の心とゆっくり向き合う過程、自分らしさを表現することをとても大切にします。
 
このワークショップでは様々な墨の濃淡や、筆使いを学びながら、鯉、鳥といったお題をシンプルに、かつ自己表現豊かに和紙に描きます。

篆刻印ワークショップ

Sumi-e (Japanese Ink) artist, Junko Azukawa will host a Hanko stamp carving workshop. The red stamps or seals are often seen in traditional Japanese artwork and documents. This seal is used in place of a signature and is an important part of traditional Japanese culture. 

In this workshop, you will learn about, design and carve your own Hanko stamp. You can use it for your artwork, photographs, Christmas cards, as your business logo and more. Please bring your reading glasses if you use them as you will be carving a small stone with a small chisel. All materials are provided. Suitable for people aged over 12.

自分だけのオリジナル篆刻印を作ってみましょう。伝統的な日本の美術や文書によく見られる赤い印は署名の代わりに使用されてきました。このワークショップでは、自分の印をデザインし、篆刻する方法を学びます。でき上がった篆刻印は自分の作品、写真、クリスマスカード、ビジネスのロゴなどに使用できます。

参加される方は、小さな印刀で小さな石を彫ることになりますので、読書用眼鏡をご使用の方は必ず持参してください。篆刻に必要な全ての材料、道具は全てこちらで用意します。12歳以上の方に適しています。

Nerikiri Experience Workshop by Minniesweets (Sold out)

In this fun and unique experience, hands-on 90mins beginners class you will learn about Japanese confectionery Nerikiri, key ingredients such as sweet bean paste (anko), how to use tools and some techniques to create 2-3 beautiful nerikiri, that you can take home your own creations! Almost too beautiful to eat, nerikiri are designed to engage your 5 senses! The nerikiri experience is also about balance and immersing yourself in the moment!

Minnie will run two different classes that please read carefully before book your seat.

You can take them home with a matching green tea to enjoy.
*Nerikiri material is provided that this class doesn’t make Nerikiri dough.

TSUMAMI-ZAIKU JAPANESE KANZASHI FLOWER MAKING WORKSHOP BY MAYUMI – moomsyau

Let’s have fun and learn Traditional Japanese TSUMAMI-ZAIKU.
CHIRIMEN TUSMAMI ZAIKU artist, Mayumi is going to have a workshop at the Japaneseasy.
Would you like to make a one of kind special accessory for you or as a gift to someone you love?
TSUMAMI ZAIKU is one of the traditional Japanese crafts born in the Edo Period, and is a decoration made by combining pieces of cloths cut into small squares which then we pinch with tweezers to make flowers.

I will be holding 3 different workshops/1.5 hrs each WS / 6 seats p/ws

WS1: Maru Tsumami technic
WS2: Ken Tsumami technic
WS3: Hishi Tsumami technic

*You get to choose a type of hair clip: 2way clip, hair tie or KANZASHI on the day
*I’ll provide all tools to use on the day (e.g., scissors and sharp tweezers)
*The colour will be randomised
* If you also require reading glasses, I recommend that you pls bring it as well

JAPANESQUE IRIS FOLDING by yukimi breaden

Iris folding is a simple craft method that involves layering materials in a preset pattern. In this workshop you’ll use the iris folding technique in combination with traditional Japanese materials to create your very own framed mini kimono artwork. Select from a range of authentic yuzen origami paper or upcycled vintage kimono fabric, then follow a cutout kimono pattern and template to layer your paper/fabric and bring your art to life. At the end of the workshop, you’ll also receive some complimentary materials so you can make your own iris fold greeting card at home.
The workshop is suitable for everyone from complete beginners, ages 12 and up. It is led by Yukimi Breaden, who transforms pre-lived kimonos into fashion garments and accessories.
The workshop includes:
– all supplies and tools you’ll need on the day
– a card base, template, and extra yuzen origami to make your own greeting card at home

アイリスフォールディングとは、あらかじめ決められたパターンで素材を重ねていくシンプルなクラフト技法です。このワークショップでは、この技法と日本の伝統的な素材を組み合わせて、自分だけのフレーム作品を作ります。友禅折り紙、またはビンテージの着物ヤーンからお好きなものを選んで、ミニ着物の型紙とテンプレートに従って紙や布を重ねて、作品を仕上げていきます。
このワークショップは12歳以上の初心者から参加できます。

Chakabuki, also known as the “tea guessing game,” is a traditional Japanese practice where participants taste different types of tea and try to identify them. This game dates back in history and was popular among the aristocracy and samurai!
